BioI have once learned that if you treat yourself with love and respect, you will attract people who show you love and respect. I am a teenager who belongs to a family that has helped me grow into a person who loves and respects herself. With this knowledge I have developed and still am developing, into a person who is determined, compassionate, and very much appreciative for all that my life has shown me thus far.
To tell me I can not do something, will only make me want to prove you wrong. For as long as I can remember, I recall my parents talking about my determination. It was not until I grew older, did I understand what they meant. I always want a challenge and I always want to perform that challenge well. Sometimes this quality may frustrate others, but when used in a positive manner, it has helped me succeed at many things. One time when I truly relied on the quality of determination, was when I had my first bike crash only two weeks before the start of my first National Triathlon Series race. I was covered in road rash and had deep bruising to my lower back and leg. I was told that maybe I should hold off and not race. My determined nature would not allow me to not participate in the event I had been training for. I told myself I can do this and I can do this well. I did race two weeks late in Winnipeg, with bandages covering my road rash, as I aggressively passed through the transitions of my race. I was first out of the water and held onto complete the race in 5th place. I never once thought I could not do it, I only thought how could anyone think I could not.
To describe me as being determined is accurate, probably as accurate as saying I am compassionate. A time that exemplifies this quality, is when I was doing a hard, technical water run in the dive tank at the local recreation centre. I was in the middle of an intense workout when a older gentle man, in the water at the same time doing his workout, stopped me as I approached the wall. He spoke to me in admiration of how well I was able to water run. “You are amazing at this, you must be training for something, so important.” Instead of politely nodding, I stopped at the wall to talk for a moment. The gentleman spoke to me about why he was water running, which continued to lead into a story about who he was and what he has done in his life. I listened intently all the while feeling compassion towards this man for all that he had been through. He was a war veteran, who saw more in his life time then I could imagine having to deal with. My goals in life are to succeed in sport, his at my age, were to stay alive. I believe one needs to have compassion towards others for who they are, what they have done and how they may make a difference in your life, even if it is just to remind you of how fortunate you are.
To appreciate someone is to value at true worth. I am already an accomplished Senior National level swimmer and a member of the Canadian Junior National Development Team. I wish for more, but I know none of what I have done nor what I will do was solely because of myself. I appreciate my coach for training and instructing me. I appreciate my caregivers, physiotherapist, massage therapist, chiropractor, acupuncturist and family doctors for keeping me healthy and safe to train at my best. However, most of all I appreciate my family. My young brothers Beau and Dallas give of themselves without even knowing it. I take energy and time away from my Mom and Dad which leaves less for them. They are unselfish, and are not even aware of the gift they are giving me. I appreciate my Mom for the many hours spent driving me from training sessions, to training sessions, to appointments and then back to training sessions. Also for all her wonderful meals that wait me after a workout. Who could be so fortunate? I appreciate my Dad, for his hours of work he puts in, that allow me to be in an expensive sport such as triathlon. My parents listen all the time. They listen to me when I come home from a workout so pumped on how great it was and, all I want to do is share it with them. I appreciate how they are strong for me and always my to supporting fans. I am an athlete, a good athlete that is lucky to have such a supportive team behind me.
To focus on the qualities you love about yourself will only lead you to discover more great things about who you are. I am determined, compassionate, and very appreciative. These qualities that I have learned to love about myself have introduced me to wonderful things and events but, even more wonderful people and relationships.
