Mountain bikes are for going into the wilderness and riding over dirt, grass and rocks. There are many different types of Mountain biking. Cross country bikes have 3-5 inches of travel and climb extremely well. They are meant to be comfortable for long rides. All mountain or “trail” bikes have 5-6 inches or travel. These bike climb fairly well, but descend much better than a cross country bike. This type of bike is meant for someone who wants to ride a bit of everything, whether it is cross country to downhill. Downhill mountain bikes have 6+ inches of travel. These bikes are meant to go fast downhill. Usually you would push this style of bike uphill or if you are at a bike park (like Mt. Washington), you would put the bike on a lift and it would take it up for you.
There are also hardtail bikes which have no suspension in the rear. You can get these bikes for cross country or all mountain riding. A lot of cross country racers will ride hardtails, or someone who wants a challenge.
